252-3001-00L Advanced Topics on Information Systems

Course Content

This seminar covers research topics in the general area of information systems. This semester the focus is on the efficient implementation and optimization of distributed and parallel database systems. In particular, we will cover algorithms and data structures for distributed and parallel database systems.

First Meeting and Schedule

The seminar will be organized in two blocks.  That is, we will meet on two Saturdays during the semester at which the talks will be given. However, we will meet for the first time on September 22, at 3pm in Room IFW C 42. At this first meeting we will discuss two things:
  (a) assign topics to students and
  (b) determine the two Saturdays that meet everybody´s schedule.

Seminar Topics and Schedule

Here is the list of topics, schedule, and other relevant information.

Rules

Each participant writes a self-contained report of about 10 pages. Furthermore, each participant gives a talk of about 30-45 minutes. The first version of the report is due two weeks before the date of the talk. This first version of the report will be discussed with the supervisors (Gustavo Alonso or Donald Kossmann) in the week before the talk. The final versions of the report are due at the end of the semester.

Grading will depend on the quality of the report, talk, and active participation during the seminar.
